QuadraMed Announces Winners of 2009 QUEST Awards

Three leading hospitals are recognized for superior achievement with QuadraMed’s technologies and services

Reston, VA — September 10, 2009 —

RESTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep. 10, 2009-- QuadraMed (NASDAQ: QDHC), a leading provider of healthcare information technologies and services that help turn quality care into positive financial outcomes, today announced that West Park Healthcare Centre, Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS), and Hunterdon Medical Center (HMC) are the winners of the 2009 QuadraMed User Excellence in Software Technology (QUEST) awards. Divided into the three categories of Care Delivery Improvement, Financial Improvement, and Integration Achievement, the annual awards recognize success in maximizing operational efficiencies and delivering high quality care through QuadraMed technologies.

“We are pleased to honor these organizations for their innovative use of QuadraMed’s healthcare technology and demonstrated return on investment using our solutions,” said Duncan W. James, QuadraMed’s President and CEO. “Given today’s challenging economic picture, it’s imperative that hospitals look to implement technology solutions that improve their bottom line and improve quality of care through tangible results just as these QUEST award winners have done.”

West Park Healthcare Centre received the Care Delivery Improvement award for its use of QuadraMed CPR® (QCPR) to enhance clinical decision support related to patient allergies, a key area of patient safety. An established user of QCPR since 1999, the 487-bed Canadian facility based in Toronto, Ontario, audited its system and discovered that only 55 percent of its patients had allergies documented within QCPR prior to medications being ordered – a critical step in avoiding potential drug interactions. Investigating the matter, West Park found that clinicians were not receiving alerts to enter patient allergies before a medication was ordered if patient allergies had already been documented during an earlier admission. To address the problem, West Park configured QCPR so that medications could not be ordered unless allergy information was entered at every patient admission. The change has enabled the provider to improve compliance from 55 percent to 100 percent; thus ensuring immediate clinician alerts of potential medication errors.

NGHS earned the Financial Improvement award for realizing dramatic improvements in productivity, efficacy and cost-savings through its implementation of QuadraMed AcuityPlus. The 461-bed hospital in Gainesville, Ga., used the QuadraMed solution to optimize acuity-based staff scheduling and budgeting for inpatient nursing units. Implemented in 2007, the QuadraMed solution enabled the nursing division to develop evidence-based staffing processes to best match nursing assignments with patient needs and further improve RN skill sets to drive higher quality care. Additionally, the solution has yielded significant quantifiable results:

  • Reduced overtime by 10 percent in 2008 and is 50 percent under budget this year*.
  • Lowered contract labor expenses by 74 percent in 2008 and is 66 percent under budget year-to-date*.
  • Slashed shift incentive by 48 percent 2008 and is 60 percent under budget this year*.

NGHS saved a total of $720,000 in 2008 from contract labor and overtime savings and $309,000 year-to-date*.

HMC won the inaugural Integration Achievement award, which recognizes organizations that leverage interoperability to improve ROI, patient safety or workflow efficiency. The Fleming, N.J.-based, 178-bed facility interfaced QuadraMed Affinity® Patient Registration and QuadraMed Affinity® Order Management with disparate laboratory and ambulatory electronic medical record and practice management systems to streamline workflow processes and enhance care delivery, resulting in increased outpatient laboratory revenue. The multi-system integration gave HMC a more optimal level of effectiveness and scalability needed to compete with commercial laboratories and produced more than $100,000 in incremental monthly revenue for its laboratory. HMC expects revenue to rise even further as more physician practices are linked to the connected care delivery system.

Each QUEST Award entrant submitted a detailed application describing its achievements, business issues, objectives, approach and the final results achieved using QuadraMed products. Each QUEST Award category was judged by separate panels comprised of six independent healthcare information technology experts.
