QuadraMed Launches Industry's First ICD-10 Compliant Learning Tool at AHIMA Summer Symposium

Quantim Coding Simulator delivers "real world" coding experience to facilitate transition to ICD-10

Reston, VA — July 28, 2009 —

RESTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jul. 28, 2009-- QuadraMed® Corporation (NASDAQ:QDHC) will showcase its ICD-10 compliant encoder training tool, Quantim® Coding Simulator, at the Virtual Laboratory of The American Health Information Management Association's (AHIMA) Assembly on Education Symposium, taking place July 27- 29, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nev. This knowledge-based encoder training tool will help enable coders and students to gain proficiency in using ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS code sets well ahead of the mandated implementation date of October 1, 2013. Significantly, the training tool includes an embedded “GEMS1 mapping tool” and other features for easy identification of crosswalks between ICD-10 codes and ICD-9 codes.

“We believe that the Quantim Coding Simulator is the first U.S. compliant ICD-10-CM/PCS encoding tool available for training purposes within the nation. Although international versions offer similarities to the U.S. version, coders here must have access to training tools that fully meet our country’s unique payer reimbursement system,” states Cathy Fields, QuadraMed’s senior director of Health Information Management (HIM) products. “By leveraging QuadraMed’s advanced training tools now, healthcare entities can help ensure a smooth and efficient transition to ICD-10 with limited disruption to business operations and cash flow.”

The transition from 13,000 ICD-9-CM codes to approximately 68,000 ICD-10-CM codes, and 3,800 procedure codes to 73,000 ICD-10-PCS codes presents a significant challenge to healthcare organizations due to the current shortage of coders and the extensive training needs for coding staff. However, with Quantim Coding Simulator, students and professional coders can quickly and easily learn the new mandated coding structure and guidelines using a “real world” application in a test environment that closely simulates the live experience of managing the greatly expanded code sets of ICD-10.

Added Ms. Fields, “QuadraMed is dedicated to providing tools and other educational materials to help healthcare organizations navigate every step of the way during this transformational time. In partnership with AHIMA’s Virtual Laboratory, we are providing leadership and guidance to give HIM coding professionals the information, tools and technologies they need in order to meet upcoming challenges.”

1GEMS = ‘General Equivalent Mappings’; GEMS is provided as a public domain tool by CMS to assist with the conversion of ICD-9 CM to ICD-10-CM and ICD-10CM to back to ICD-9 CM. The GEMS forward and backward mappings are also referred to as “crosswalks” as they provide information linking of one code set to another.
